Disco Wall Effect

Because I love you all and don't want to subject you to a novel if you're not here to read one, just click above to download the stencil file!

For those of you here for a short novel:

I love a good bachelorette order. This client asked for a modern disco theme - pretty florals, classy lingerie, and all the disco sparkle that I could manage. Her inspiration photos included a mirrored disco wall with a neon sign and I knew I wanted to find a way to make that work in cookie form.

The problem: How the hell do I replicate the small mirror tile effect?

A regular grid stencil seemed too large to read as disco ball mirrors and wouldn't quite give the same effect as a smaller design would. This is one of those instances where graphic design and cookies overlapped and fifteen minutes later I had a digital stencil file ready to be cut on my Cricut.

Whereas the stencil cutting process seemed to take forever (hello, alllllll the tiny squares), decorating the cookie was quick!

What you'll need:

Silver Airbrush (I love Amerimist!)

Edible Glitter

One thing you'll notice about the stencil file is that it does not have the standard border that most stencils do in order to fit a stencil holder. The reason is twofold: one, the cookie is large and I wanted the pattern to extend all the way across the surface and two, I don't use a stencil holder...ever. It's definitely a matter of personal preference with regard to stenciling and airbrushing, but they've always been cumbersome. Instead, I lay my stencils directly on my cookie and then place a silkscreen (I use the the 6"x10" from 3 Sweet Chicks) on top. It has worked for me from the start and it keeps me from having to spend a lot of time swapping out stencils in the holder/frame.

Once your flood is dry enough to begin airbrush work, use the stencil and the silver airbrush color to add the grid pattern to the cookie. To get even coverage with clean lines and no color under or overspray, gradually build up the color in thin, even coats. It took three passes for me to achieve a uniform look.

Immediately after airbrushing the final layer of color, remove the stencil from the cookie and spray edible glitter over the wet airbrushing - this adheres the glitter to the cookie!

Allow the cookie to dry and gently brush off excess glitter using a fan brush.

From there, the world is your oyster! Add text, pipe on some flowers, greenery, or balloons - and then stand back and revel in that sweet sweet glittery disco wall creation.

Also, maybe consider sweeping your kitchen because edible glitter ends up everywhere.
